Cooking Has Changed At My House
I got myself a Big Green Egg on Friday. Friday night I grilled what may be the best steak I have ever eaten. Last night was chicken and this week I will grill smoked sausage, baby back ribs, burgers, more chicken, and pork chops along with a variety of vegetables and fruits. Also going to grill a pizza which I have heard of but never tried before. It is truly an amazing device.

US Senate Bean Soup Recipe
1 pound dried Great Northern beans
1 meaty ham bone or 2 meaty smoked ham hocks
3 cups chopped onion
2 cups chopped celery
3 minced garlic cloves
1 cup mashed potatoes
Salt and pepper
Either soak the beans overnight in 12 cups of water or put the beans in water and bring to a boil, shut them off and let them sit 2 hours.
Bring beans to a simmer and cook until the beans are just barely tender, about an hour. Put the ham in the pot and cook for 45 min on low. Remove hambone / hocks to cool. Add onion, celery, and garlic and cook until everything is tender. Cut meat from the bones, chop, and return to the soup. Salt and pepper to taste and add potatoes to thicken.
Serve with hot crusty bread.

Cutting Grocery Costs
Most of those who know me know I like food and I like to eat well. That being said, I like to save money whenever I can. Here are some things I have learned over time.
- Buy store brands especially the newer "Up market" brands like Kroger's Private Selection. These are high quality products that are reasonably priced.
- Be aware of the package sizing. For example, most of the "half gallon" containers of juices in the dairy case are no longer 64 ounces but are 59 ounces or less. The store brands are likely to be the full 64 ounces.
- Use the merchants frequent shopper programs as they often will mail you targeted coupons and make discounted items in the store only available to those who have the card.
- If you are using coupons from the store, you can also use a manufacturer coupon along with it. I have gotten items at 75% or greater off the marked price.
- Go to the store website and download coupons. Kroger will also load coupon discounts to your frequent shopper card.
- Google "grocery coupons" and check out some of the links there.
- Go to the manufacturer websites and download coupons.
- Buy long lasting staples when they are on sale, read the grocery ads.

This Weekend
Went to Ellijay, GA to buy apples. It is time to make home made apple butter again. At batch can last 2 - 3 years and I think this one will be a big batch.

Kale and White Bean Soup
This is a recipe I tried for the first time last weekend. It makes an excellent cool weather soup.
1 lb dried Great Northern beans, picked over and rinsed
1 1/2 tblsp olive oil
2 medium onions chopped
4 cloves minced garlic
5 cups of chicken broth
8 cups of water divided
1 tsp fresh rosemary finely minced or 1/4 tsp dried
2 bay leaves
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1 lb of smoked sausage sliced into 1/4 inch pieces
1 lb fresh kale, stems removed and chopped into 1 inch pieces
2 tsp salt
4 carrots cut into half moons
Soak beans covered by 2 inches of water and refrigerated overnight. Drain and rinse
In a large heavy soup pot heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and cook, stirring frequently until soft (about 5 min). Add garlic and cook for another minute. Add beans, broth, 4 cups water, rosemary, bay leaves, and black pepper. Stir and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until beans are just tender, about 90 minutes.
While beans are cooking, brown sausage on both sides in a heavy skillet. Transfer to paper towels to drain.
Once beans are tender, add kale, salt, and remaining 4 cups of water to the soup. Simmer until the kale is tender, about 15 minutes. Adjust seasonings to taste, remove bay leaves, and serve with some kind of hot bread. I like cornbread with mine.
